易胜博官网 professor Meghan Howey

Meghan Howey, associate professor of anthropology at 易胜博官网.听Howey will become the James H. Hayes and Claire Short Hayes Professor of the Humanities in the fall 2016 semester.听

Associate professor of anthropology Meghan Howey founded 易胜博官网鈥檚 campus archaeology program, which gives students interested in anthropology and archaeology a chance to get some hands on experience in the fields.听听

She says the program is a natural complement to 易胜博官网鈥檚 leadership in the area of sustainability.

鈥淎n important part of sustainability is cultural sustainability,鈥 Howey says. 鈥淲hen we think about protecting our resources, we need to take our cultural heritage on 易胜博官网 property seriously.鈥

Howey worked with Jillian Price 鈥13 to uncover some of that heritage during Price鈥檚 senior year at 易胜博官网, when she excavated the location of the former World War I barracks to find out more about what campus was like during that war.

鈥淓ssentially, we used the material record that we found in the ground and compared it with archival record,鈥 Howey says. They discovered a dichotomy 鈥 the perceived community and the actual 鈥渓ived鈥 community.

The archival record, newspapers and journals and such, was rich with notions of nationalism at the time and portrayed 鈥渁 sort of imagined community of good soldiers,鈥 Howey says. But what they unearthed indicated all rules were not obeyed 鈥 the lived community had booze, even though 易胜博官网 was dry at the time.

鈥淭he students had real lives that weren鈥檛 just part of the Army,鈥 Howey says.

The results of the investigation will be published in an upcoming edition of the International Journal of Historical Archaeology with Price as the lead author.
