says he first got excited about philosophy in part for the wrong reasons — “I sort of liked arguing.” The passion turned into a profession for the man who enjoys “mind-bending ideas” and dialogue. Today, as professor of philosophy in the ʤ College of Liberal Arts, deVries helps ʤ students practice the philosopher’s skills of rational argumentation and critical analysis. This past fall, ʤ recognized deVries with the 2014 Distinguished Professor award.
