On Aug. 21, 易胜博官网 space plasma physicist Nathan Schwadron鈥檚 field of study will get a lot more crowded.
鈥淥ur nation as a whole will become solar observers and members of the heliophysics community,鈥 he says of the historic total solar eclipse that will cross the United States that day. Heliophysics describes the study of how the sun affects space and the space environment of planets.
, the Norman S. and Anna Marie Waite Professor of Physics in 易胜博官网鈥檚 (EOS), happily welcomes the nation into his academic corner of the solar system.
鈥淎 full solar eclipse is exceedingly rare, and the fact that we鈥檙e just arbitrarily in this path is a remarkable event,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 worth celebrating.鈥
And worth studying, as astronomers have done since Galileo鈥檚 day.
As the moon blocks our view of the sun, scientists and eclipse-watchers (wearing proper eyewear, of course) can see the corona, the halo of the sun鈥檚 outer atmosphere that鈥檚 usually obscured by the star鈥檚 brightness.
鈥淲hen the eclipse shields the visible disc of the sun you can see the emissions that are happening in the corona,鈥 Schwadron says. The corona, for heliophysicists, is where the action is: It鈥檚 the source of magnetic fields and solar wind that accelerates far into the solar system and could affect spacecraft and orbiting astronauts as well as Earth-bound communications systems.
Chasing the Moon
鈥淓clipse data has become a very important complementary data set by which we can understand the structure of the magnetic fields of the sun,鈥 Schwadron says, noting that some colleagues have used eclipse data to put forth a still-controversial idea of how magnetic fields emanate from around the sun. 鈥淓clipse data can provide an independent way to verify or upturn some of the ideas you鈥檙e getting from other datasets.鈥
Schwadron will celebrate this eclipse more as a citizen than a scientist, but he鈥檒l soon get an up-close look at the sun. He is the science operations lead for two instruments that will fly through the sun鈥檚 atmosphere on board .听That mission, scheduled to launch in August 2018, will provide our closest-ever observations of any star.
Terry Forbes, research professor emeritus听of physics, studies solar flares and coronal mass ejections that can鈥檛 actually be seen during an eclipse, but he's nonetheless excited about the solar event. 鈥淚 saw a total solar eclipse in Asia in 1995, and it was quite breathtaking,鈥 he says, and far more powerful than the partial eclipse many of us will be able to see Aug.听21. 鈥淭he wealth of phenomena that occur during totality is very rich, and TV videos do not do them justice.鈥
