Paul College alumni provide internship sites for the Social Innovation Internship program

易胜博官网鈥檚 Social Innovation Internship provides a great way for students to gain experience working for businesses that have a social mission. The program is also a meaningful way for 易胜博官网 alumni to engage with their alma mater.

The program, administered through 易胜博官网鈥檚 Center for Social Innovation and Enterprise, started in 2011 to help students gain experience with employers that integrate social innovation into their company听mission and strategy. The center is a joint venture of the and the . Economics alumnus Paul Bradley 鈥86, president of ROC USA, which helps homeowners in manufactured home communities buy their communities as co-ops, has been involved with the Social Innovation Internship program since its inception.

鈥淩OC USA was an early adopter, eager to engage 易胜博官网 students in our social venture鈥檚 mission,鈥 he says. ROC USA, and its local partner, ROC NH/ The 易胜博官网 Community Loan Fund, have hosted interns who helped conduct research, raise funds, market their projects, and develop tools and templates. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been a win/win in each case,鈥 says听Bradley.

Hospitality management graduate听Alison Pyott 鈥92听has worked with 易胜博官网 Career and Professional Success to hire students at all of her workplaces. Now, as a wealth manager with Veris Wealth Partners, a pioneer in the sustainable investment field, hiring 易胜博官网 student interns through the Social Innovation Internship has been a great fit. 鈥淥ur founding partners and employees have long believed in the power of business to create social and environmental change,鈥 she says.

Because of Veris鈥檚 commitment to sustainability, Pyott鈥檚 social innovation interns have concentrated their efforts on this topic. The students have worked on the company鈥檚 annual carbon footprint and offset, assessed the company鈥檚 overall sustainability听and evaluated and implemented ways to increase sustainability.

鈥淭he Social Innovation Internship program provides additional benefits, as the program attracts highly qualified candidates, assists with intern searches and hiring听and provides a cohort training program that augments the host companies鈥 activities,鈥 Pyott says.

鈥淚鈥檝e thoroughly enjoyed the work I鈥檝e done with ROC NH at the 易胜博官网 Community Loan Fund,鈥 says听Conor McFarland 鈥17, who participated in the program during the summer of 2016. 鈥淭he 易胜博官网 Community Loan Fund is a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI). After working for a CDFI,听I鈥檝e started to care more about affordable housing, community facilities听and technological literacy initiatives.鈥

After McFarland鈥檚 summer internship at ROC NH and the 易胜博官网 Community Loan Fund, he accepted a part-time position with the 易胜博官网 Community Loan Fund, and he听recently accepted a full-time employment offer with the organization.听

In addition to providing meaningful internship experiences for students, the program has also led to the creation of both the 易胜博官网 Social Venture Innovation Challenge, an annual competition featuring student entrepreneurs with social missions, and 易胜博官网鈥檚 student chapter of Net Impact, a nationwide nonprofit dedicated to solving social challenges, protecting the environment听and orienting products and businesses toward the greater good.
